HST/ GST

The HST refers to the Harmonized Service Tax while the GST refers to the Goods and Service Tax. These taxes pertain to the owning of property and services rendered throughout the provinces in Canada. The main difference in the two taxes is that the HST only applied to the provinces that participate in a harmonization, or rather coordination, of their collective provincial GST. These provinces are Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, the GST is found in the provinces that do not participate in the harmonization program.

It is important to note that Quebec is the only province that utilizes a selective process in which the province can choose which system (the HST or GST) to pay.
